Famed Speaker, False Minister, and Professor Michael Eric Dyson debate Sophia Nelson about her stance on gay marriage. He argues that the Bible is not literal therefore cannot be taken or interpreted literally.
He uses verses in Leviticus 20:13, as well as Matthew 5:29, and Matthew 18:9 (And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire) to justify his argument.
Mr. Dyson actually said that the verse says if your eye offends thee cut it off but that was a misquote, actually what the Bible does say is if your eye offends thee pluck it out.
He argues that those verses are not to be taken literally, but in Israel anciently if a man was found to be engaged in sex with another man they were actually both stoned to death.
So how can it not be literal? Those biblical verses are most certainly literal. Christ states that if thy eye offend thee pluck it out, and that is a literal statement. And what he means is that if the eye is causing you to sin in a way that can and will ultimately result in death spiritually and you cannot bring that thing under subjection, it is best that you pluck that eye out.
But certainly, God can and will restore that eye when that man or woman is resurrected to Glory. That is a small thing for God to do, and a small thing to sacrifice to attain so much. And a small thing to sacrifice to avoid losing so much.
What is being emphasized is first do everything in your power to overcome the thing that is offending God and you. This is certainly possible when you have the fear of God in your heart and the holy spirit available empowering you to overcome the sin.
But, if with all that, you still are not able to overcome or get rid of the sin whatever it may be, the eye or some other part of the body, it is better to get rid of that thing as opposed to allowing it to consistently cause you to transgress resulting in condemnation when judged.
Those verses are actually instructions to the saints, to those that follow and are committed to obeying the commandments and the word of God as a whole. And those verses are to absolutely be taken literally.
What is so disturbing to me is how so many of these self-proclaimed Christians and teachers are so quick to claim to love and represent Christ but in the same breath support homosexuality/lesbianism and homosexual adoption, things that God and Christ despise.
As well as voice their support of hate crimes bills for sexual deviants, and completely deny the validity and authority of God, Christ, and the Bible, by doing so. Mr. Dyson also claims that he has been an ordained Baptist minister for over 30 years.
And my response to that is, if it is in fact true, then you have been versed in an error-filled, biblically inaccurate doctrine for over thirty years, and that probably would explain your absolute ignorance as it relates to scripture.
And based on that you are honestly not qualified to teach or quote the bible in any regard, because you do it from an inaccurate standpoint, which makes your interpretations flawed, wrong, error-filled, and completely off base. Servants of God are commanded to strongly oppose and condemn these abominable behaviors.
The point is strongly argued by many false self-proclaimed ministers and teachers that Leviticus 20:13 and other verses cannot be taken literally. But why don’t you ask those who were stoned to death under that law if it is literal or not?
Now, because we are no longer under the law of condemnation but under grace when a person stumbles in that regard they are not to be stoned to death or put to death but they are to confess their sin before God. They are then forgiven and then they are to be about the business of working to correct and bring under subjection that thing or problem that greatly offends God, whatever it may be.
Mr. Dyson says verses like Leviticus 20:13 are not to be taken literally but these were laws that ancient Israel imposed and enforced with deadly seriousness, notice in St John 8:3-12. They were clearly about to stone this woman to death who was caught in the act of adultery. But Mr. Dyson claims that the Bible is not literal!?
Notice how Christ is presented with and deals with this dilemma.

11 She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
Also, notice how Paul emphasizes how anyone that despised the law of Moses was put to death under two or three witnesses. The law of death, punishment, and or condemnation, which is what Israel enforced anciently with deadly seriousness is further confirmed here.
Hebrews 10:28
28 He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses.
Now notice what Christ instructed the woman to do in verse eleven “go and sin no more”.The act of grace being in full effect, but Christ also making it clear that the grace shown was not a license to continue in sin.
Grace is provided as a free unmerited favor to overcome the sin in this life so as not to be condemned for that sin in a future judgment. And grace has never nor will it ever be a license to sin notice

Christ actually instructed the woman to go and sin no more. He also emphasizes in other verses where he showed this type of grace and mercy to go and sin no more unless a greater more serious punishment comes upon you.

But what exactly is he saying when he says before something worse comes upon you? A spiritual destruction is what is being emphasized, something that will be the result of continuing in the sin. This is what is being emphasized, something that is clearly outlined by the word of God. Actually believing that grace is a license to sin results in condemnation when judged, something that is again clearly outlined by the word of God

These verses are most certainly literal Mr. Dyson and these things are to be taken literally something that is clearly proven by the word of God.
But because we are no longer under the law of condemnation when this type of sin occurs as it relates to the servants of God those who are struggling to overcome certain sinful traits and behaviors, they are not to be dealt with under the terms of the old law but grace is to be applied while that person works diligently to overcome the offense whatever it may be.
God will execute the punishment phase in the judgment if these individuals continue to disobey clear biblical instruction and willfully sin, something Christ himself further elaborates on in
Matthew 13:49-50
