Yet this rapid development is causing serious concern among seasoned veterans in the AI field \u2014 so much so that over 1,000 of them have signed an open letter calling on AI developers to slam on the brakes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The letter was published on the website of the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/futureoflife.org\/open-letter\/pause-giant-ai-experiments\/\" target=\"_blank\">Future of Life Institute<\/a>, an organization whose stated mission is \u201csteering transformative technology towards benefitting life and away from extreme large-scale risks.\u201d Among the signatories are several prominent academics, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and Twitter CEO Elon Musk.Related Videos<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/elonmusk_onehand_composite_200526.jpg?fit=720%2C479&amp;p=1\" alt=\"tesla and spacex ceo elon musk stylized image\" class=\"wp-image-2504030\"\/><figcaption>Getty Images\/Digital Trends Graphic<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The article calls for all companies working on AI models that are more powerful than the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/computing\/chatgpt-4-everything-we-know-so-far\/\">recently released GPT-4<\/a>\u00a0to immediately halt work for at least six months. This moratorium should be \u201cpublic and verifiable\u201d and would allow time to \u201cjointly develop and implement a set of shared safety protocols for advanced AI design and development that are rigorously audited and overseen by independent outside experts.\u201dRelated<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/computing\/gpt-5-artificial-general-intelligence\/\">GPT-5 could soon change the world in one incredible way<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/computing\/chatgpt-vs-bing-chat\/\">ChatGPT vs. Bing Chat: which is the best AI chatbot?<\/a><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/computing\/google-launches-bard-to-rival-chatgpt\/\">You can now try out Google\u2019s Bard, the rival to ChatGPT<\/a><\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The letter says this is necessary because \u201cAI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity.\u201d Those risks include the spread of propaganda, the destruction of jobs, the potential replacement and obsolescence of human life, and the \u201closs of control of our civilization.\u201d The authors add that the decision over whether to press ahead into this future should not be left to \u201cunelected tech leaders.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI \u201cfor the clear benefit of all\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/chatgpt-versus-google-bard.jpg?fit=720%2C404&amp;p=1\" alt=\"ChatGPT versus Google on smartphones.\" class=\"wp-image-3278937\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The letter comes just after claims were made that GPT-5, the next version of the tech powering ChatGPT,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/computing\/gpt-5-artificial-general-intelligence\/\">could achieve artificial general intelligence<\/a>. If correct, that means it would be able to understand and learn anything a human can comprehend. That could make it incredibly powerful in ways that haven\u2019t yet been fully explored.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What\u2019s more, the letter contends that responsible planning and management surrounding the development of AI systems is not happening, \u201ceven though recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one \u2014 not even their creators \u2014 can understand, predict, or reliably control.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Instead, the letter asserts that new governance systems must be created that will regulate AI development, help people distinguish AI-created and human-created content, hold AI labs responsible for any harm they cause, enable society to cope with AI disruption (especially to democracy), and more.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The authors end on a positive note, claiming that \u201chumanity can enjoy a flourishing future with AI \u2026 in which we reap the rewards, engineer these systems for the clear benefit of all, and give society a chance to adapt.\u201d Hitting pause on AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 would allow this to happen, they state.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Will the letter have its intended effect? That\u2019s hard to say. There are clearly incentives for AI labs to continue working on advanced models, both financial and reputational.
