Instead, it\u2019s based off of a\u00a0<em>feeling<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 the feeling that if a man says they were really born a woman, damn\u00a0the chromosomal evidence\u00a0and call them a woman, or else we call you a bigot.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s a good reason why the cultural left\u00a0doesn\u2019t mention science\u00a0when it comes to the transgender debate. That\u2019s because it isn\u2019t on their side.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"Top-ad\" class=\"sponsor Top\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong>In a 2016\u00a0piece\u00a0for the Witherspoon Institute, one of the doctors who ran (and subsequently shut down) one of the pioneering sex-change surgery centers in America says that\u2019s it\u2019s an incontrovertible fact \u201ctransgendered men do not become women, nor do transgendered women become men.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Paul R. McHugh is a Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry at Johns Hopkins University. He was also in charge of psychiatrist-in-chief at Johns Hopkins, which pioneered sex change operations from 1975 to 2001.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 1979, he made the decision to halt operations after he saw what science had to say about those suffering from what we now call gender identity disorder \u2014 and it\u2019s decidedly different than what the left would have you believe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jon Meyer, who headed up the university hospital\u2019s\u00a0Sexual Behaviors Consultation Unit, studied a small sample of patients who had undergone sex change surgery. According to the\u00a0Baltimore Sun, he found that while the surgical procedure may be \u201csubjectively satisfying\u201d for patients, there was\u00a0\u201cno objective advantage in terms of social rehabilitation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"IC1-ad\" class=\"sponsor IC1\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong>\u201cWith these facts in hand,\u201d McHugh wrote, \u201cI concluded that Hopkins was fundamentally cooperating with a mental illness.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Almost 40 years after he shut Johns Hopkins\u2019 operation down, McHugh still believes that transgenderism is fundamentally an illness \u2014 and one that the media is enabling.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe idea that one\u2019s sex is fluid and a matter open to choice runs unquestioned through our culture and is reflected everywhere in the media, the theater, the classroom, and in many medical clinics,\u201d McHugh wrote in the 2016 piece.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt has taken on cult-like features: its own special lingo, internet chat rooms providing slick answers to new recruits, and clubs for easy access to dresses and styles supporting the sex change. It is doing much damage to families, adolescents, and children and should be confronted as an opinion without biological foundation wherever it emerges.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"IC2-ad\" class=\"sponsor IC2\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong>Sadly, the medical field has been taken in by the fashion of the moment, according to McHugh, which he says has left him as a lonely voice of reason speaking truth to power.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI am ever trying to be the boy among the bystanders who points to what\u2019s real,\u201d McHugh wrote. \u201cI do so not only because truth matters, but also because overlooked amid the hoopla \u2014 enhanced now by\u00a0Bruce Jenner\u2019s celebrity\u00a0and Annie Leibovitz\u2019s photography \u2014 stand many victims.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThink, for example, of the parents whom no one \u2014 not doctors, schools, nor even churches \u2014 will help to rescue their children from these strange notions of being transgendered and the problematic lives these notions herald.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Unlike the champions of transgender causes in the media, McHugh has 40 years experience working with transgender individuals. He\u2019s not only seen the studies, he\u2019s seen patients firsthand. Which means, of course, he\u2019s considered a bigot by the left.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"IC3-ad\" class=\"sponsor IC3\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong>A 2015 piece on McHugh by liberal online rag ThinkProgress was unsubtly\u00a0titled\u00a0\u201cMeet The Doctor Social Conservatives Depend On To Justify Anti-Transgender Hate,\u201d presumably by someone who has zero experience working with transgender individuals and has seen roughly zero patients suffering from gender identity disorder. Another\u00a0piece\u00a0from the folks at The Daily Beast identified McHugh as an \u201cAnti-LGBT Doc.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>McHugh insists that he\u2019s \u201cnot against transgender people,\u201d merely that he\u2019s \u201canxious they get the help they need.\u201d But that\u2019s the kind of attitude that doesn\u2019t\u00a0get you plaudits from MTV\u00a0or\u00a0courage awards.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>That shouldn\u2019t matter in the medical field \u2014 but alas, it does, including at the program which Dr. McHugh used to run. Thirty-eight years after McHugh made the decision to shut the sex-change surgery unit down, Johns Hopkins resumed a\u00a0transgender health service with an accompanying surgical program.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>On\u00a0so many issues, we\u2019ve come to a point where popular feeling can override scientific debate, or even established scientific facts. In this case, the danger isn\u2019t just to a society where modishness is valued over facts.
